Export your ChatGPT chats and bring them along
In ChatGPT, go to Settings, then Data controls, then Export data. You’ll get an email with a link to a ZIP file, and the link works for 24 hours. Then pick that ZIP file in dunel, just as it is. I’ll read your conversations and sort everything into your brain.
At a glance
- What you get
- A ZIP file with your chats and other data from your account
- How long it takes
- ChatGPT Help says the email can take up to 7 days
- How long the link works
- 24 hours after you receive it
- Who can export
- Signed in on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus or Pro. On Business or Enterprise, ask your workspace owner
- What I bring in
- Up to 10,000 of your own messages per import, the newest if there are more
Request your export
- 1
Sign in to ChatGPT.
There’s no export while you’re signed out.
- 2
Open your profile menu and choose Settings.
- 3
Go to Data controls.
- 4
Under Export data, choose Export.
- 5
Choose Confirm export.
If an export is already running, let it finish before you request a new one.
Download the file
- 1
Wait for the message with your export.
It arrives as an email to the address on your account. If your account only has a phone number, you’ll get a text instead. ChatGPT Help says this can take up to 7 days.
- 2
Tap Download data export in the message.
The link works for 24 hours. If ChatGPT asks you to sign in, use the same account that requested the export.
- 3
Save the ZIP file.
On iPhone, Safari puts it in the Files app under Downloads. You don’t need to unzip it. Download it right away and keep it, I’ll take it later too.
Pick it in dunel
- 1
In the dunel chat, tap + next to the message field and choose Bring old chats.
Or go to your profile and tap Import.
- 2
Choose ChatGPT and tap Choose file.
- 3
Pick the ZIP file.
You can pick several exports at once. Anything that appears twice, I only take once.
- 4
Keep dunel open until everything is prepared.
After that I keep going, even if you close the app. You can see how far along I am in the chat, right above the message field.
What I do with it
- Your sentences keep the date you wrote them.
- I read ChatGPT’s answers as context. They never count as your words.
- I write down what I learn about you and sort it all into topics in your brain.
- When I quote you later, it’s your sentence, word for word, with its date.
- I keep pictures and other attachments as originals. I can’t read them yet.
- The whole file stays intact, even if I only read the newest 10,000 messages. With Take everything with you you get it back.
To read and sort your chats, the content I need goes to the service I also use to answer you in the chat. Who gets what is explained under Security.
If something goes wrong
The email doesn’t arrive.
ChatGPT Help says it can take up to 7 days. Check your spam and promotions folders too. If your account only has a phone number, look for a text. If nothing has arrived after 7 days, ChatGPT support can help.
The link has expired.
It only works for 24 hours. Just request a new export, the same way as the first time.
The link doesn’t open anything.
Sign in to ChatGPT with the same account that requested the export, then tap the link again.
I can’t find Export data.
ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces don’t offer a self-service export. Ask your workspace owner. On ChatGPT Edu it depends on your role.
I can’t get into my account.
Then use the privacy portal for ChatGPT: Make a Privacy Request, then I have a consumer ChatGPT account, then Download my data.
Some chats are missing.
An export can’t bring back chats you’ve deleted. And if you have more than 10,000 messages, I read the newest.
dunel can’t open the ZIP file.
Then unzip it with one tap in the Files app and pick the JSON files from the folder. That works just as well.
